Earthship Tyrepounding

Fiji's firt EARTHSHIP has been completed!

This demonstration building was constructed during 01 – 13 June 2015 by an International team of experts and volunteers to showcase a low-cost and disaster-proof type of building.

The walls are made out of tyres compressed with earth, thus creating 150kg bricks that make the building resistant to earthquakes, floods and natural disasters.

The shape of the Earthship and the buried roof make it resistant to high winds.

This Earthship building incorporates 280 old tyres, 220 pieces of bamboo, 55 old glas bottles, 120 rice bags, local coral.

Seaweed and dry grass were used for the roof insulation, coral was used instead of gravel.

This low-cost and disaster-proof building technique could change the way of building in the entire Pacific Region and the knowledge transfer from this project is being further distributed to New Zealand and Vanuatu.

The location:
The land for the building site is provided by Vatia Beach Eco Project, a small eco initiative located on the North Western coast of the main island of Fiji, Viti Levu, 1.5 hours North of Nadi International Airport. Vatia Beach Eco Project is located between the towns of Ba and Tavua, is completely off-grid, and has a small beach and beautiful sunsets. The build site is literally 100ft from the ocean, so when you are not working you will be able to enjoy the beach and the ocean at its fullest. Check out for more info on the location.

The program:
During our two-week program, you will learn how to build an Earthship and its six basic concepts. You will be taught by our certified Earthship crew members who have experience building Earthships all over the world and who have just returned from building the first tropical Earthship Hut in the Philippines.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime expreience which allows you to give something back to the world and at the same time learn important skills to adapt to your own life back home and enjoy the relaxing features of the beautiful island of Fiji.

We will follow a six day work week, Sunday being open for activities and leisure, like taking a boat out to one of the nearby sand-banks, visiting a local school, fishing, snorkelling, or relaxing on the beach. The evenings will be a great time to relax with BBQs, ocean swims, bonfires on the beach, etc.

We arrived at this in the early 2000’s and are still perfecting and refining it. We have a building prototype that harvests its own electricity and water; contains and treats its own sewage; heats and cools itself without fuel and...Read More

Michael Reynolds addresses the Flint, MI water crisis

In this short clip Michael Reynolds talks about the Flint, MI water crisis.  He points out that in New Mexico, where we only get 8" of annual precipitation, we are able to build buildings that harvest, filter and use their own water four times.  Flint gets 40" of annual precipitation and it should be be relatively simple to design rainwater harvesting systems that would provide clean water to the residents.  He...Read More
